What Is Hydrogen Peroxide?

Hydrogen peroxide is an odourless, colourless and tasteless liquid that resembles water and can easily be mistaken for it. However, unlike water (H₂O), hydrogen peroxide contains two oxygen molecules (H₂O₂), giving it exceptional cleansing, disinfecting, bleaching and first aid properties. The additional oxygen molecule oxidises (chemically breaks down) many substances it comes into contact with, especially organic substances. This makes hydrogen peroxide a powerful cleaning agent for removing microbes, fungus, mold, bacteria, etc.

Food-grade hydrogen peroxide is a particularly pure form of hydrogen peroxide that can be used around food or on surfaces that come into contact with food because it does not contain toxic stabilizers. Conventional hydrogen peroxide from the pharmacies is generally not food grade and often contains industrial, toxic stabilizers, unless stated otherwise.

Hydrogen peroxide solutions with a concentration of 3% or less are safe and do not cause skin irritation or burning the way higher concentrations can. Therefore, 3% peroxide is used in products of personal care and household, such as mouthwashes, toothpastes, detergents, multi-purpose cleaners and food wash solutions. It is best to choose food grade hydrogen peroxide containing products rather than industrial ones to avoid absorption of toxic stabilizers into the skin and body.
